Summer is right around the corner and we are just as excited as you are to hit the pool, and the beach, and enjoy some fun in the sun! Before we grab a swimsuit and pack a cooler there are some things to think about and prep for. June 1st is the first day of hurricane season. The good news is that in December, Tropical Storm Risk released its early prediction for the 2023 hurricane season, and believes it will be below average. Even knowing that it is still important for the safety of your home and your family to be prepared for the worst that hurricane season can bring.

Planning For Storms

Prepare your emergency supplies – All of us have seen barren shelves across town once we know a storm is coming. Create an emergency supply kit early so you don’t have to worry once a storm is coming. Make sure that you have a food and water supply, all medicines that you may need, flashlights, and extra batteries.

Be prepared with an evacuation plan – Get to the gas station early, and make sure you have a full tank in case an evacuation order goes into effect. You should know what you will need to bring with you if you have to leave your home. Things like pet food, important documents, and an emergency kit should all be brought with you.

Trim your trees – Storms and hurricanes knock down branches and trees every year. Falling trees and branches can damage your home, car, power box, or electrical riser. It’s necessary to do this as part of your planning. Once storm season is here it may be too late to get a professional out to trim up your trees before the storms come.

Preparing Your Home

We tend to prepare all of our emergency supplies in advance of a storm, but forget one of the most important things, making sure our home is a safe place during a storm. With heavy winds, water, and lighting what could be a minor inconvenience on any normal day might pose a danger during a hurricane. It is a smart idea to plan and have a licensed and insured electrician come out and inspect your home’s electrical systems before a storm is coming. If there is anything that needs to be addressed you can have it fixed well in advance of a storm.

Even if your home’s electrical system is in great shape you cannot account for the damage the storm may do to power lines around you. If you’ve spent a week without power in the hot, muggy Florida summer after a hurricane came through you know just how difficult it is. You can’t cook, you have no air conditioning, and you are often still waiting for roads to be cleared. A generator can make this a much easier and safer process both during and after the storm for you and your family. A professional electrician can quickly and correctly come out and set up the generator to make sure it will function throughout the storm and after.
